II. History: Characteristics: Limited to those things that will probably
not change.
Land Area: (square miles approximately)
Population: (approximately) HISTORY: Bound Brook is the oldest community in Somerset County, New Jersey. The borough was incorporated in 1891, and the first settlers were Scottish, followed by the Dutch and other northern Europeans. Early in the twentieth century Italians and Poles came to work in the woolen mills which had been established in the area.
Bound Brook played an active part in history from the Colonial era to the present. In the winter of 1778-79, George Washington chose Middlebrook Heights, in Bound Brook, as the campsite for his troops. From this position, he could observe the British troops in Perth Amboy and New Brunswick. While the army was at Middlebrook Heights in 1777, the Continental Congress approved the Betsy Ross flag as the official national banner and the flag was reportedly first flown at this location. The Betsy Ross flag now flies twenty-four hours a day at the Middlebrook Campgrounds and the Declaration of Independence is read every July 4th on these grounds to commemorate this historic site. Citizens of Bound Brook have served America in every war our country has fought, from the Revolution to the present.
CHARACTERISTICS:
The woolen mills of the early 1900s were replaced as the major industry, after World War I, by the chemical industry, principally Calco Chemical Company (later Cyanamid Company) and Bakelite Company (later Union Carbide Corporation) located on the outskirts of town. Today the economy of the town is no longer dependent on a single industry, but thrives on many service and manufacturing operations of the Central Jersey area. As an attractive residential community, it is home to many who work in New York City and along the major transportation corridors of New Jersey. Always a transportation hub, Bound Brook stands at the crossroads of major highways – Routes 287, 22 and 28 - and is convenient to the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike and Route 78.
LAND AREA: Bound Brook’s size is 1.60 square miles, or 1,025 acres.
POPULATION: 9,487 in the 1990 census.
