HISTORY: There are two theories about the origin of the name of the town. One claims that the profuse growth of the Hawthorne bush in the area at that time inspired the name. The other claims the borough was named in honor of Nathaniel Hawthorne. While neither can be proven, it is known that the area was so abundant with thorny Hawthorne bushes, that farmers had to clear them from their land to protect their livestock.

CHARACTERISTICS: The Borough of Hawthorne is located in Passaic County about 20 miles from mid-Manhattan. It is made up of mostly one & 2 family homes. 1999 home sales range from $50,000 to $385,000.

LAND AREA: 3.63 square miles

POPULATION: 17,084 approximately

EDUCATION: There is a high school, a middle school, and three elementary schools. A full range of special services are available to children with learning disabilities or physical, social, emotional or psychological impairment. In addition, St. Anthony's Catholic School and Hawthorne Christian academy compliment the public school system.

SOCIAL & CIVIC ORGANZATIONS:

The Boys & Girls Club offers year-round programs for preschoolers and year round child care services. Approximately 800 members annually use the facility.

The Hawthorne Caballeros, marching band, has received worldwide recognition. They have won world championships, national championships and New Jersey State titles. They have performed for past presidents and ambassadors from the United States while in Cuba. The roster now includes more than 1000 members. The band is sponsored by American Legion Post 199.

VFW - William B. Mawhinney Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1593 meetings are held in the Ambulance corps meeting room. The Ladies Auxiliary meets in members' homes.

The Hawthorne Rotary Club conducts an annual blood drive and other fundraisers. This group meets at Leggio's Restaurant, 235 Diamond Bridge Avenue.

RECREATION: There are 150 acres of recreational space in the borough with 98 acres located in Goffle Brook Park. Hawthorne has its own municipal swimming pool, six public tennis courts, four Little League fields, one Junior development baseball field, a junior football field and a soccer field. Hawthorne High School's athletic complex contains an all weather track, two tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, a baseball field and a football field. Elementary schools provide areas for a summer program of recreation run by the Board of Recreation. The board subsidizes organized volunteer programs in the borough and sponsors special events and trips for all ages.

Bus - New Jersey transit runs through the town.
Rail -The train station at the end of Washington Avenue has train service to Manhattan.
