Congratulations on your new home!

Moving is an exciting milestone, but once the moving truck pulls away, you're often left with a house full of boxes. While unpacking may seem overwhelming at first, taking it one step at a time can make the process much more manageable.

The North Central Jersey Association of REALTORS® (NCJAR®) has put together these simple tips to help you settle into your new home with less stress.

1. Start with the Big Stuff

If you've hired professional movers, have them place furniture in the rooms where it belongs before they leave. Having beds, sofas and large furniture in place makes it much easier to unpack around them.

If you're moving yourself, use furniture sliders, moving blankets and proper lifting techniques to protect both yourself and your new home.

2. Keep Your Unpacking Supplies Close

Before opening your first box, gather everything you'll need, including:

  • Box cutter or scissors
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Paper towels or microfiber cloths
  • Trash bags
  • Recycling bags

Take a few minutes to wipe down shelves, cabinets and countertops before putting everything away.

3. Unpack the Essentials First

Focus on the items you'll need during your first day or two, such as:

  • Bedding and pillows
  • Toiletries
  • Medications
  • Phone chargers
  • Coffee maker (for many of us!)
  • Basic cookware and utensils
  • Pet supplies
  • Important documents

Getting these necessities unpacked first helps you feel comfortable while you work through the rest of the boxes.

4. Keep a Donation Box Nearby

Even after packing carefully, you may discover items you no longer need.

Set aside a donation box as you unpack. If something doesn't fit your new space or lifestyle, donate it instead of finding a place to store it.

5. Go Room by Room

Trying to unpack the entire house at once can quickly become overwhelming.

Instead, focus on one room at a time. Most people find this order works well:

  • Kitchen
  • Bedrooms
  • Bathrooms
  • Living spaces
  • Closets and storage areas
  • Garage or basement

Completing one room before moving to the next provides a sense of accomplishment and keeps the process organized.

6. Empty the Boxes Before Organizing

Rather than putting away items one by one while boxes are still stacked everywhere, empty all the boxes in a room first.

Once the cardboard is gone, you'll have a better idea of your available space and can organize more efficiently.

7. Ask for Help

If family members or friends are available, don't be afraid to ask.

Children can unpack their own rooms, while older family members can help break down boxes, organize supplies or carry lighter items. Many hands make light work!

8. Work in Short Sessions

You don't have to unpack everything in one day.

Try working for about 45 minutes, then take a 15-minute break. Staying hydrated, grabbing a snack or taking a short walk can help you recharge before tackling the next room.

9. Set Realistic Expectations

Remember that creating a home takes time.

It's perfectly okay if every picture isn't hung or every closet isn't organized during the first week. Focus on making steady progress instead of striving for perfection.

10. Have Fun With It

Play your favorite music, listen to a podcast or enjoy an audiobook while you unpack.

Adding a little entertainment can make the process more enjoyable—and before you know it, you'll be settling into your new routine.
