Data & Statistics

When you hire a real estate agent who is a REALTOR®, you’re gaining more than just a salesperson—you’re partnering with a professional who has the skills, connections, and expertise to showcase your home at its very best.

Your REALTOR® will create a customized marketing plan, guide you through preparing your home for showings, and list your property in the Multiple Listing Service (MLS)—the most effective way to reach serious buyers and maximize your home’s value. But just as importantly, your agent helps protect your privacy and security throughout the process.

Why Privacy Matters in Today’s Market

With smartphones and cameras everywhere, anyone entering your home could potentially capture images or video. Professional photos and video are also taken to highlight your property for the MLS and online listings. While these tools are essential for marketing, they also increase the importance of protecting your personal information.

Five Steps to Protect Your Privacy
1. Stow Personal Items and Photos

Put away family pictures, visible calendars, mail, awards, diplomas, and anything else that reveals personal details. Even small items can give away more information than you realize.

2. Secure Your Valuables

Lock up jewelry, firearms, prescription medications, and important documents. A lockbox or safe offers peace of mind while multiple people are entering your home.

3. Discourage Unapproved Photography

Ask your REALTOR® to include a “No Photography” note in your MLS listing. You can also place friendly signs in your home reminding visitors not to take photos or video.

4. Use an Electronic Lockbox

Most MLSs provide secure electronic lockboxes accessible only to licensed real estate professionals. These record exactly who enters your home and when—offering more protection than a standard combo lock.

5. Request Photo Removal After the Sale

Once your property is sold, you may be able to request that interior photos be removed from the MLS. While the front photo is often required for records, removing interior images can help restore your privacy. Ask your REALTOR® what your local rules allow.

Special Note: Appraisals and Inspections

It’s not just buyers who enter your home. Appraisers, inspectors, and repair professionals may also take photos and notes during their visits. Creating a clean, neutral environment—and following the steps above—helps protect your privacy while ensuring your home is presented accurately.
